Which vehicles need RUC?
The common light-vehicle rates are shown below. Heavy-vehicle rates vary by RUC type, axle setup and weight.

When and how to pay RUC
Choose 1,000km units
Buy online, in the NZTA app, or from a counter agent. Light-vehicle distance licences do not expire.
Have the details ready
You will need the plate number, current odometer reading and a way to pay. Display the RUC label as required.
PLEASE NOTE
Important exemptions and checks
- Electric vehicles weighing 1,000kg or less do not pay RUC.
- Heavy electric vehicles over 3,500kg are exempt until 30 June 2027.
- Some vehicles used almost entirely off road or unsuitable for regular road use may qualify for an exemption.
- Rates and fees can change. Check the vehicle’s assigned RUC type and the latest NZTA information before buying.
