Cove Car Insurance Review 2026

By insurspyPublished 19 June 2025

Introduction

In our editorial review, Cove stands out as a digital-first car insurer offering comprehensive cover only. It may suit drivers who want online self-service and an agreed-value policy, but it is not a like-for-like option for someone looking for third-party-only or third-party fire and theft cover.

The key decision is not whether Cove is universally “best” or cheapest. It is whether its eligibility rules, agreed value, excess, permitted use and optional benefits fit your car and how you drive it. Premiums are individual, so our team recommends comparing a Cove quote with other car insurance options in New Zealand using the same driver and vehicle details.

Cove car insurance at a glance

Area to compareWhat Cove currently offers or statesWhy it matters
Cover typeComprehensive car insurance only.Cove does not currently offer third-party-only or third-party fire and theft policies.
Vehicle valueAgreed-value cover, shown as the sum insured on the schedule. For a total loss, the maximum payment for the car is generally the agreed value less the applicable excess.
Monthly arrangementA series of one-month contracts that renew monthly until cancelled. It is not simply an annual policy paid in monthly instalments. Terms and price can be reviewed at renewal.
Driver eligibilityNo cover for anyone under 21.This can be decisive for households where a younger person may drive the car.
Optional benefitsCourtesy-car hire, roadside assistance and excess-free windscreen/window cover may be available if bought and recorded on the schedule.Do not assume an optional benefit is included in the base policy.
SupportLive chat, email and telephone support are listed.Cove is digital-first, but it is not online-chat-only.

What the comprehensive policy covers

Cove says its comprehensive policy covers accidental damage to, and theft of, the insured car, as well as liability for damage caused to another person’s car or property. Cover remains subject to the policy wording, schedule, excesses, limits and exclusions.

The policy uses an agreed value rather than treating agreed value as an add-on. Check the sum insured on your schedule before buying and at each renewal. In a total loss, the wording says payment is based on that agreed value after the applicable excess is deducted.

The liability limit is important when comparing comprehensive policies. Cove’s current wording states a maximum of $20 million for liability claims arising from one event, including legal costs and expenses incurred with Cove’s express consent.

Eligibility and use restrictions to check carefully

Cove’s public eligibility guidance says there is no policy cover for anyone under 21, including a non-regular driver who is not named on the policy. Do not rely on an informal arrangement if a younger family member or friend could drive the vehicle.

The policy is intended for personal use and incidental work use. Commercial use needs Cove’s approval and must be noted on the schedule before cover applies. The wording specifically identifies restricted uses including rideshare, courier or delivery work, trades work, certain transport of tools or equipment, car hire and peer-to-peer arrangements.

These conditions are a meaningful trade-off. A policy can look suitable based on price or online convenience but be unsuitable if the vehicle’s actual use falls outside the permitted use on the schedule.

Optional benefits and excess points

For an additional premium, Cove’s wording lists three optional benefits: courtesy-car hire, Cove roadside assistance, and excess-free windscreen/window cover. Each must be purchased and recorded on the schedule.

  • Courtesy-car hire: generally available for up to 30 days, unless Cove agrees to extend it.
  • Roadside assistance: has a 24-hour stand-down period and is limited to two call-outs in a 12-month period.
  • Windscreen/window cover: check the schedule to confirm that excess-free cover has been selected.

Cove also says it will refund an excess after accepting an accidental-loss claim if it can confirm that an identified other driver was completely at fault and accepts liability. Specified identity and vehicle details are required, so record the other driver’s information at the scene where it is safe to do so.

Monthly policy, cancellation and renewal

Cove describes its monthly policy as a series of one-month contracts. It renews monthly until cancelled, rather than being an annual contract spread across monthly payments. Customers may cancel at any time. The wording provides for a full refund during the 14-day free-look period, subject to its terms, and a refund for unused time on risk after that.

This flexibility should not be read as a guarantee that every cancellation has no cost or adjustment. Check your quote, schedule and the current wording. Cove may change the premium, excesses, limits or other terms at monthly renewal by giving at least 14 days’ notice.

Underwriter and financial strength

Cove identifies Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Company, Ltd as its underwriter. Aioi publishes financial-strength ratings of A+ (Stable) from A.M. Best and A+ (Stable) from Standard & Poor’s.

A financial-strength rating is an opinion about the underwriter’s ability to meet ongoing policy obligations. It is not a rating of Cove’s policy value, customer service or the outcome of an individual claim. We do not use it as a substitute for comparing the wording and schedule.

Contact and service channels

Cove lists live chat, email and phone support. Its published phone number is 0800 268 347. For claims, Cove directs callers to the same number, option 1. Check Cove’s contact page for current service hours before calling.

Our assessment: who should consider Cove?

Cove may be worth a quote for an eligible driver who wants comprehensive-only, agreed-value cover and is comfortable managing insurance online. It may be less suitable where an under-21 driver could use the car, where the car is used for restricted commercial activities, or where you need a different cover type.

We have not assigned a star score in this review. Current independent product ratings and customer-review averages can be profile-specific or change over time, and the research reviewed for this update does not support a current universal rating.

Practical Takeaway

  1. Get a quote using accurate driver, vehicle, address and use information.
  2. Confirm every possible driver is eligible, particularly if anyone is under 21.
  3. Check the agreed value, each excess and the liability limit on the schedule.
  4. Declare rideshare, delivery, trade or other commercial use and obtain written confirmation if required.
  5. Decide whether the optional courtesy car, roadside assistance or windscreen/window benefit is worth the additional premium.
  6. Read the current policy wording before purchase and again when a monthly renewal notice arrives.

This article is general information, not personalised insurance advice. Policy terms, eligibility, premiums and optional benefits can change, so rely on the policy wording and your individual schedule when making a decision.
