AMP Car Insurance Review 2026

By InsurspyPublished 17 June 2025

Introduction

AMP offers three levels of car insurance in New Zealand: Comprehensive, Third Party Fire and Theft, and Third Party Property Damage. AMP states that its insurance (excluding travel) is underwritten by Vero Insurance New Zealand Limited. In our editorial review as at 17 August 2026, AMP may be worth considering for drivers who want standard cover choices, online purchase and management for eligible online policies, or access through an adviser or broker.

This is general information, not personalised insurance advice. Cover, acceptance, excesses and eligibility depend on the individual policy, vehicle, drivers and use. For wider comparison guidance, see our New Zealand car insurance guide.

Who AMP may suit

AMP may suit a driver looking for one of the three mainstream cover levels and who values the ability to buy online, manage an eligible online policy through My Insurance Manager, or arrange cover through an adviser or broker. The product page also advertises approved-repairer workmanship guaranteed for as long as the customer owns the vehicle, subject to the policy.

It is not possible to call AMP universally good value from public product information alone. Your quote can vary with factors such as the vehicle, drivers, location, claims history, use, selected excess and underwriting assessment. Compare like-for-like quotes rather than assuming that the lowest premium provides the most suitable protection.

Key cover points and trade-offs

Liability cover

AMP advertises legal liability for property damage of up to $20 million across its displayed car cover options, subject to policy terms. Liability cover concerns damage you cause to someone else's property; it is different from cover for damage to your own car. Read the applicable wording and schedule for the full limits, definitions and exclusions.

Glass: avoid assuming every claim has no excess

The glass benefit is not identical for every event or cover level. AMP says Comprehensive includes excess-free chip repair, while excess-free windscreen/window replacement is an optional extra. Its FAQ says the replacement option can be added to Third Party products too. Before purchase, check the option selected and the excess that applies to a replacement claim.

Roadside Assistance conditions

AMP Roadside Assistance is available 24/7 in New Zealand for the covered vehicle, with no annual call-out limit, subject to its terms. It is an optional extra for a new Comprehensive policy bought online, not a standard benefit stated for all AMP car policies. The terms require current registration and a WoF, and exclude taxi, fare-paying passenger, cartage and courier use. These conditions matter if the vehicle is used for work or passenger transport.

Claims, complaints and policy documents

AMP offers online motor claims. For emergency repairs or accommodation, AMP lists 0508 806 244. Its listed general claims phone hours are weekdays 8am–5pm and Saturdays and normal public holidays 9am–5pm. These listed phone hours should not be confused with 24/7 general claims support.

If you are unhappy with an outcome, follow AMP's complaints process. AMP says an unresolved complaint can be referred to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO) after AMP issues a letter of deadlock.

Policy wording is especially important. AMP's car forms page lists a Home Plan car policy wording effective for new business and renewals from 1 July 2024 as well as older documents. Do not assume a legacy document applies to your insurance: check your current schedule and the wording that applies to your policy.

How to compare an AMP quote

  1. Match the cover level with the risks you want to insure, including whether you need protection for damage to your own vehicle.
  2. Compare the excess as well as the premium. A higher excess can lower a premium but increases what you may pay when claiming.
  3. Check listed exclusions, driver restrictions, vehicle use and any conditions relevant to your circumstances.
  4. Confirm whether optional glass replacement or Roadside Assistance is included, available and suitable for your use.
  5. Read the policy wording and your quote schedule before accepting cover.

Consumer Protection NZ advises comparing coverage and exclusions, rather than price alone. This is a useful discipline when comparing AMP with other insurers.

Practical Takeaway

AMP is an AMP-branded car insurance option underwritten by Vero, with three standard cover levels and selected optional features. It may be a practical option if its quote, excess, policy terms and purchase options fit your needs. Obtain a current quote, compare it on the same basis as alternatives, and verify the policy wording and schedule before deciding. For insurance specialists, AMP lists 0800 267 263. Customers with AMP Roadside Assistance can use 0800 83 76 76 for roadside emergencies.

This article was produced by Insurspy's internal editorial and research team. In our editorial review, we compare publicly available policy information and prioritise authoritative New Zealand regulator, government and insurer sources. We do not assign AMP a blanket Insurspy or Canstar star score here: ratings can depend on the product, customer profile, methodology and date. We review content for accuracy and practical usefulness, but readers should confirm current terms directly with the insurer.
